Uraidla Lockup & Police Station - providing sanctuary and comfort since 1898

Vulgar language in public, disorderly behaviour, common assault, illegal grazing and driving to market without lights were all too common in the gold mining, timber cutting and market garden town of Uraidla in the 1890’s.

An existing two room dwelling was extended to create a police station with lockup cells to bring local troublemakers under control.

Built by Edmund Wilcox who also built the Uraidla Hotel where the troublemakers no doubt congregated, the heart of Uraidla hasn’t changed.

While rumours abound of bushrangers, bullion theft and embezzlement, the facts of who spent long lonely nights in the Lockup are hard to come by. Lying there it’s easy to imagine what dastardly scoundrels spirit’s may lurk in the dark.

For those who need more space, discover the old Uraidla police station

Luxury 1890's police station

The police station is set in beautiful gardens and has three bedrooms each with a queen size bed. The sitting room with bay window provides generous space for relaxing, with the fully equipped kitchen being another. The main bathroom has bath, shower and toilet with washing machine and dryer discretely under bench, with an adjacent 2nd bathroom.

The original structure on this site dates from Uraidla’s earliest days. It was a two room dwelling that the Uraidla Hotel publican and local builder Edmund Wilcox built onto in the 1890’s transforming the old building into the first purpose built police station for the growing township.

Adding a large sitting room with a bay window, a main bedroom and a verandah, transformed it to also be a home for the local policeman.

As a result, the old front doorway is in the middle of the house and the rustic charm of the rear two rooms is in contrast to the more modern 130 year old addition at the front of the building.

Recently completely renovated the original police station has been transformed into a three bedroom luxurious Uraidla experience. Ideal as wedding accommodation with the bride and groom in the Lockup, for a group of friends or family.
